I'm the office administrator who handles purchasing for a 38-person engineering firm. Use this when you're buying components for:

  • A small off-grid office, workshop, or storage facility
  • A hybrid system that needs backup power
  • An energy storage project that has to fit an existing panel array

The process assumes you know your loads and your budget. If you haven't measured the loads, do that first.

Step 1: Lock Down Battery Voltage and System Type First

Before you look at an SRNE MPPT solar charge controller, decide whether the system is 12V, 24V, or 48V. This is the single most common source of confusion. List your loads with their surge current. Choose an inverter that can handle the surge, not just the running watts. Same for your battery: a 10kWh battery with a 2C discharge rate has a different power capability than one with 0.5C.

Step 5: Compare Total Cost, Not Sticker Price

When I compare quotes, I put everything into one table. The price you see on the first email is never the price you pay.

Here's the baseline I use:

  • Product price
  • Freight and insurance
  • Import fees or customs
  • Spare parts you should order with it (fuses, connectors, cables)
  • Communication accessories (WiFi module, RS485 cable, USB converter)
  • Warranty shipping for a potential claim
  • Your time to set it up and troubleshoot

Step 6: Verify Manuals, Communication Protocols, and Warranty Support

Before you send a purchase order, download the manual and check the details. A real product manual will tell you the exact terminal sizes, PV input limits, and battery charge profiles. The most frustrating part of solar component purchases is finding out that the "standard" package doesn't include the part you need. For example, some controllers do not include the RS485 cable, the mounting screws, or the LCD remote panel if the controller is mounted somewhere you can't see.

  • Not keeping a copy of the invoice and serial numbers. You'll need them for a warranty claim.
