Last June, our operations manager dropped a spec sheet on my desk and said, 'We need those two maintenance trailers off diesel before October. You are managing the purchase.' That sentence started my first solar procurement project.
I am the office administrator for a 64-person utility maintenance company. I process 60-80 orders a year, manage about $400,000 in vendor spending, and report to both operations and finance. What I knew about solar inverters at the time could fit in one paragraph of a manual.
The Request That Started It
The two trailers were off-grid work trailers used by field crews. Each one needed lights, a laptop and router, battery chargers for tools, and a small heater for winter. The trailers had roof space for solar panels, but no grid connection. The maintenance team wanted a solar battery system that would survive cloudy weeks without anyone visiting the site every day.
My job was not to install it. My job was to buy it with a budget that finance would actually defend.
The Shortlist That Looked Good on Paper
I built a shortlist from four directions. First, a complete SRNE package with a hybrid/off-grid inverter, separate MPPT controller and lithium batteries. Second, an unbranded kit from a regional warehouse priced well below everything else. Third, a Hoymiles hybrid inverter quote from a local distributor. Fourth, an EcoFlow Delta 1300 solar generator because the field supervisor kept asking why we could not just buy a portable power station and plug it in.
The EcoFlow Delta 1300 solar generator was the most tempting shortcut. It is self-contained, quiet and simple. But our trailer load was roughly 800 to 1,100 watt-hours per day in winter. That meant the EcoFlow would need recharging almost daily, and every recharging cycle added wear to a consumer battery pack. It is a great tool for temporary field work, and we did buy one later for a truck. It is not a fixed off-grid plant.
The Hoymiles hybrid inverter quote was also fair. That product is well suited to rooftop solar projects where panel-level monitoring and flexible grid-tied battery backup matter. Our situation was different: two unshaded trailer roofs, one battery bank, no grid connection, and a small maintenance crew that wanted one place to look for manuals. The extra modularity was not worth the added integration work.
Why the SRNE Quote Won After I Added the Rest
The unbranded kit was $2,350 cheaper than the SRNE quote. I almost submitted the purchase order. What stopped me was an old lesson about invoices.
In 2021, a vendor without proper invoicing cost my department $2,400 in rejected expenses. Since then, I verify a supplier's paperwork process before I buy anything. The unbranded solar vendor only offered a bank transfer receipt. There was no itemized invoice with serial numbers, no battery datasheet showing BMS protections, and no phone support after the sale. The price looked low only if I ignored the risk of getting stranded.
What I eventually ordered was two SRNE 5kW hybrid/off-grid inverters, two SRNE 30A MPPT charge controllers, and four 48V lithium batteries designed for solar storage. On each trailer, the main roof array went to the inverter's built-in MPPT input. A smaller west-facing array went through the separate SRNE 30A MPPT. That gave us more charging capacity without buying a second inverter for each site.
The SRNE App Made the Difference
The SRNE app was not on my original requirement list, but it should have been. Once the systems were commissioned, I could see battery voltage, PV production and load data from my office. During a three-day storm in February 2025, I used the SRNE app to check both trailers without sending a service truck on a four-hour round trip. That is the kind of cost that never appears on a quote line.
The Fire-Safety Question That Made TCO Real
The other cost item people forget is safety. The field foreman asked me directly, 'And how to put out lithium battery fire if one of these packs is damaged?'
I did not want to guess. According to NFPA guidance on lithium-ion battery safety (nfpa.org, accessed January 2025), the first step is to move people away and call emergency services. For a small fire that is safe to approach, the goal is to cool the cell and stop heat from spreading to nearby cells. Water is generally recommended for cooling because a standard extinguisher can stop flames but does not remove the heat that causes thermal runaway.
The unbranded kit did not include a battery management system with documented over-temperature protection. That made the comparison simple. A fire risk is not a hidden cost I want to explain to finance.
What I Would Tell Another Buyer
Did I get every technical detail right? No. My experience is based on two small off-grid sites and one purchasing cycle. If you are designing a large 100kW battery system or a heavily shaded rooftop, your tradeoffs will look different.
But the procurement lesson is transferable: total cost includes freight, invoice quality, remote monitoring, support, battery safety and downtime. The SRNE system was not the cheapest option upfront, but after comparing all of those factors, it was the lowest total cost for our use case. Our diesel bill for the two trailers dropped from about $630 per month to $140 per month in the middle of winter.
If you need module-level monitoring for a residential roof, a Hoymiles hybrid inverter may deserve a place on your shortlist. If you need temporary portable power, keep an EcoFlow Delta 1300 solar generator in mind. But for a fixed off-grid battery bank, I now start by comparing manuals, monitoring and thermal protection. Sticker price comes last.
